Tomorrow we’ll be raising a frosty margarita—or maybe a smoky mezcal—in the Iguana Tequila Bar to toast the anniversary of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton’s first marriage. The passionate lovebirds, who met on the set of Cleopatra (she was married to her fourth husband, he to his first wife, but enough math), kicked things off with a relatively quiet civil ceremony on March 16, 1964, saving the fireworks for later. There may have been serious ups and downs, not to mention a divorce and re-marriage along the way, but there’s no getting around the fact that Burton was a giver. And not just that enormous rock of a ring that came to be known as the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond (and sold for upwards of $8 million not too long ago). For her 32nd birthday, dear Dick presented his bride with Casa Kimberly, the very casita we’ve transformed into our jewel of a hotel (if you don’t mind our saying…). He already owned another casita (now home to our Richard Burton Suite) just next door, connected by the Puente de Amor. The superstar couple, who travelled globally and in luxury, chose this very site in Puerto Vallarta as the spot for His and Her homes. Join us to toast their fine taste and storied romance on what would be their 52nd anniversary!
Come to think of it, why not make it a weekend of indulgence. The Cleopatra Suite, perhaps?
